WEST PALM BEACH, FL (www.hedgeco.net) – Japanese Institutional investors are ahead of their international counterparts in hedge fund investments, according to the UK based hedge fund manager,Gartmore. Charles Beazley, head of institutional and alternative investments at Gartmore said, “I think that Japanese institutional investors are leading the world at the moment,” according to him,When you look at the experience of the Japanese investors it’s clearly informed by both the severity and the length of the bear market and the lack of available yield choice in the bond market.”
According to Gartmore, one of the leading groups of hedge fund investors in Japan is the Pension funds sector which managers about $4.07 trillion in pension fund assets. Japanese pension funds began turning attention towards hedge funds, in the wake of the declining equity returns. Such alternative source of return is needed to keep up with the numbers of new retirees joining the retirement ranks in Japan.
Gartmore also said the Japanese insurance sector has upped their hedge fund investments; the industry has nearly $5 billion in assets invested in alternative investments. Gartmore further said, “Now, that’s much greater than their European counterparts and is much greater than some of their counterparts in the U.S.” Experts believe that institutional investors around the globe would have put about 10 percent worth of their investment portfolios in alternative investment management portfolios by the year 2007.
Hedge funds around the world delivered about 9.64 percent to their investors from 2000-2003, according to data from Credit Suisse First Boston Tremont Index LLC and Lipper Inc. According to Gartmore statements, the firm has about $6 billion of assets invested with hedge fund managers, and about $1.5 billion in investment assets in Japan.
