Canadians nix international hedge fund regulations

Ottawa – Canada doesn’t see the need for international hedge fund regulation, which German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pushed as president of the G-8.

OAS_RICH(“Middle”); “We don’t share [Germany’s] enthusiasm. There’s less concern in North America than in some parts of Europe about hedge funds,” Canadian Finance Minister Jim Flaherty told Reuters this month.

“It’s really a transparency issue. I know there is some concern in some quarters about the perceived lack of transparency and a desire to regulate; it’s probably not achievable by particular countries,” Mr. Flaherty said.

“We have more comfort in North America, based on our experience with hedge fund transparency,” he said. “We are more used to them.”
