Toronto  David Wilson, the new chairman of the Ontario Securities Commission, said yesterday that he will target hedge funds for greater regulation, calling them a “new frontier” for securitiesregulators.
In his first major speech since taking over as OSC chairman on Nov. 1, Mr. Wilson said Canadian regulators must adopt measures to ensure that hedge fund investors are getting clearer information about their investments and understand the risks they are taking. “Recent scandals have placed the spotlight on this new industry, and the need for greater transparency,” he told an OSC conference in Toronto.
Canadian investors have been rocked this year by a series of scandals and losses involving hedge funds.
