Judge says no to proposed hedge-fund rule

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s plan to force hedge-fund advisers to register with the agency “doesn’t hold up,” a U.S. Appeals Court judge said Friday.

Judge Harry Edwards, one of three judges hearing arguments in a lawsuit against the regulations in Washington, told SEC Solicitor Jacob Stillman the agency had stretched the definition of hedge-fund clients to make the registration proposal work.
