Apr. 29–Venture capital investment fell further in the first quarter, reaching its lowest level in more than five years.<\/p>\n
Total venture investment nationwide dipped to $3.8 billion in the period ended March 31, off from $4.3 billion the fourth quarter and $6.5 billion in the comparable period last year, according to data expected to be released Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The amount of venture investment is a key indicator of confidence in the technology industry, and it’s fallen to a fraction of its levels during the tech stock euphoria several years ago.<\/p>\n
Venture investment in the first quarter reached its lowest level since the third quarter of 1997.<\/p>\n
“The reality is that venture capital will not lead the economy out of this slump. It will follow it out,” said Tracy Lefteroff, who is the global managing partner of the venture capital practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers, which prepared the figures along with the National Venture Capital Association and Thomson Venture Economics, a research firm.<\/p>\n
Venture capitalists are investing at a “prudent rate” considering economic and political uncertainties, among other factors, said Mark Heesen, president of the venture-capital trade group.<\/p>\n
Venture firms invested $216.5 million in Texas in the first quarter, compared with $305.6 million in the fourth quarter and $317.8 million in the same period in 2002.<\/p>\n
In the Dallas area, venture firms invested $119.4 million in local startups during the first quarter, vs. $168.2 million in the fourth quarter and $155.3 million in the comparable period last year.<\/p>\n
