More importantly, Dan was one of the few select media with access to the Jerry Sandusky trial which he covered for Yahoo sports. Kayla Harrison recently made history by being the first American (man or woman) to win the gold medal in judo. Despite her impressive career, it hasn’t been without personal struggle. At age 16, she revealed years of sexual abuse by her former coach. She was instrumental in her abuser’s sentencing hearing and has overcome her pain to pursue her dreams.

“We are thrilled to have Dan speak at our event. His background and experience covering the Penn State trial sheds light on the terrible abuse that has happened in certain school sports programs. This issue needs to be addressed so no other child is hurt. We are also delighted to have the opportunity to honor Kayla at this year’s gala,” said Jeff Crispen of Feingold O’Keeffe Capital, a co-chair of the event. “Her courage and willingness to share her personal story has put a significant focus on the subject of child abuse and the need to actively support programs that prevent and treat it.”

Over the past 8 years, the Northeast Committee of Hearts has distributed nearly one million dollars through a total of 35 grants over the last six years to programs dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse. Last year, the annual Boston benefit raised over $250,000. The event will also feature a silent auction and a raffle. Silent Auction prizes include a stay on Martha’s Vineyard, a trip to Atlantis in the Bahamas, a two night stay at the White Elephant Resort on Nantucket, tickets to attend a live taping of Jimmy Kimmel, and more.
