{"id":47473,"date":"2015-04-14T08:11:10","date_gmt":"2015-04-14T12:11:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hedgeco.net\/news\/?p=47473"},"modified":"2015-04-14T08:11:10","modified_gmt":"2015-04-14T12:11:10","slug":"activists-disrupt-new-york-hedge-fund-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hedgeco.net\/news\/04\/2015\/activists-disrupt-new-york-hedge-fund-conference.html","title":{"rendered":"Activists Disrupt New York Hedge Fund Conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hedgeco.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/download.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-47475\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hedgeco.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/download.jpg\" alt=\"Protesters disrupt hedge fund conference in midtown Manhattan\" width=\"425\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hedgeco.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/download.jpg 644w, https:\/\/hedgeco.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/download-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/a>New York (HedgeCo.Net) &#8211; A group called the Hedge Clippers turned up uninvited at the Active-Passive Investor Summit yesterday, where over 300 activist investors, institutional investors, hedge funds, board directors, CEOs and lawyers were gathered for a day of networking.<\/p>\n<p>The Hedge Clippers targeted hedge fund managers Edward Garden, Bill Ackman and Jeffrey Smith, for their part in maintaining poverty wages at\u00a0Darden Restaurants, the Olive Garden,\u00a0Burger King, and other restaurant franchises they own.<\/p>\n<p>CNBC was live-broadcasting the conference.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Franchising is the sort of business model that makes perfect sense to hedge fund managers, who spend their careers several steps removed from the predatory practices that they push for\u00a0and profit from.&#8221; The Clippers said in a <a href=\"http:\/\/hedgeclippers.org\/hedgepapers-no-9-hedge-funds-the-fast-food-economy\/\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;The consequences of the franchise model are significant for the biggest low-wage workforce in the country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Though hedge funds use a variety of approaches \u2013\u00a0with different levels of swagger and bluster, different lingo, different PowerPoint presentation templates \u2013 the game plan is basically the same: invest in companies that are already squeezing big profits out of poverty-wage workforces, and figure out how to squeeze them further.<b><i>&#8220;<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Many of the attendees bailed during the protest, forgoing their scheduled speeches.
