Jul. 29–Companies in the Triangle are on track to have their worst year for venture capital investment since at least 1997, according to the Ernst & Young\/VentureOne U.S. Venture Capital Survey.<\/p>\n
VC firms invested $59.6 million in Triangle companies in the first half of 2003, a 72 percent decrease from an already lackluster 2002 and a major drop from the first half of 2000, when venture capitalists invested $460.3 million during the first half of the year.<\/p>\n
The number of deals for Triangle companies also has decreased, with the 12 deals in the first half of this year down from 20 in 2002 and 49 in 2000. In the second quarter, investment was $30.5 million in seven companies, led by a $17.4 million investment in semiconductor company Ziptronix. The second-quarter mid-year results are the worst since at least 1997, the earliest data available.<\/p>\n
But the Triangle isn’t alone. Nationwide, venture capital investment fell to $7.5 billion in the first half of the year, down from $11.5 billion in 2002 and $51.7 billion in 2000.<\/p>\n
North Carolina’s auto insurance rates were the ninth lowest in the nation in 2001, according to a report released Monday by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.<\/p>\n
Among states east of the Mississippi, only Maine had lower car insurance rates than North Carolina, N.C. Insurance Commissioner Jim Long said in a release.<\/p>\n
While insurers and the state settled on a 15 percent decrease for auto insurance rates in 2003, Long and the N.C. Rate Bureau, which represents insurers, still are clashing over proposed rate increases for 2001 and 2002.<\/p>\n
The N.C. Court of Appeals heard the Rate Bureau’s 2001 request for a 10.6 percent increase in June and officials expect a ruling in August at the earliest. Last year’s request for a 5.9 percent increase will be heard later, said Chrissy Pearson, an insurance department spokeswoman. In those cases, Long is seeking reductions of 13 percent and 17.8 percent, respectively.<\/p>\n
