But over a few weeks in December 2012, it looked as if he might lose everything for good.   He had $1,415. The Securities and Exchange Commission was investigating him. Investors in two hedge funds he had run were asking where their money was. The funds had about $500 in a bank account but owed investors millions of dollars. Mr. Shkreli himself owed Merrill Lynch more than $1 million.
