{"id":6170,"date":"2007-06-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T04:00:00","slug":"hedge-funds-push-for-td-ameritrade-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hedgeco.net\/news\/06\/2007\/hedge-funds-push-for-td-ameritrade-merger.html","title":{"rendered":"Hedge funds push for TD Ameritrade merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  <span class=\"intro\">Financial News Online US- Two hedge funds are pushing for Canadian online broker <a href=\"http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=TD+Ameritrade\" class=  \"keywordsearch\">TD Ameritrade<\/a> to merge with a rival in the latest demonstration of investor activism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"storytext\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=Jana+Partners\" class=\"keywordsearch\">Jana Partners<\/a> and <a href=  \"http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=SAC+Capital\" class=\"keywordsearch\">SAC Capital<\/a> want TD Ameritrade to merge with online broker <a href=  \"http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=E*Trade+Financial\" class=\"keywordsearch\">E*Trade Financial<\/a> or US mutual and retirement fund provider <a href=  \"http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=Charles+Schwab\" class=\"keywordsearch\">Charles Schwab<\/a>. They called for the brokerage to set up a special committee to investigate  strategic alternatives for the company, according to documents filed with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=Securities+and+Exchange+Commission\" class=  \"keywordsearch\">Securities and Exchange Commission<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"storytext\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=Joe+Moglia\" class=\"keywordsearch\">Joe Moglia<\/a>, chief executive of TD Ameritrade, said at a Sandler  O\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2Neill conference today the company was looking at offering a broader range of services for long term investors. When he was asked why the company had not merged with E*Trade and &#8220;what are you  waiting for,&#8221; Moglia said the company would only consider M&amp;A deals if they were a suitable fit for the business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"storytext\">&#8220;The risk associated with any of these trades is very, very significant and I have no problem taking a little longer if it is what is best for the company.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"storytext\">According to documents filed with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=SEC\" class=\"keywordsearch\">SEC<\/a>, the two hedge funds have a  combined stake of 8.4% in the business or 50 million shares and each has sought regulatory approval to buy shares worth another $600m (\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u20ac\u0161\u00c2\u00ac444m).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news\/url?sa=T&amp;ct=us\/5-0&amp;fd=R&amp;url=http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/%3Fpage%3Dushome%26contentid%3D2447976749&amp;cid=1116999767&amp;ei=-iNpRo7RHpXC0gGbw9WSCw\">ReadComplete Article<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Financial News Online US- Two hedge funds are pushing for Canadian online broker TD Ameritrade to merge with a rival in the latest demonstration of investor activism.
