{"id":6779,"date":"2007-11-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2007-11-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T04:00:00","slug":"ibm-to-buy-cognos-for-5-billion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hedgeco.net\/news\/11\/2007\/ibm-to-buy-cognos-for-5-billion.html","title":{"rendered":"IBM to buy Cognos for $5 billion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  Reuters &#8211; IBM said on Monday that it would buy Canadian business intelligence software company Cognos Inc for $5 billion, following a wave of acquisitions in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>  Investors had expected the deal, which represents a 9.5 percent premium to Cognos&#8217;s closing U.S. share price on Friday, after <span class=\"yshortcuts\">SAP Ags<\/span>&#8216;s offer for rival Business  Objects in October and <span class=\"yshortcuts\">Oracle Corp<\/span>&#8216;s (ORCL.O) purchase of Hyperion Solutions Corp earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>  All three targets make software that analyzes businesses by combing through vast amounts of data.<\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"yshortcuts\">International Business Machines Corp<\/span> said it had signed a definitive agreement to buy Cognos for $58 a share, compared with its Friday Nasdaq close of $52.98.
