But, despite the secrecy surrounding them, it is generallyaccepted that hedge funds are among the biggest users of derivatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"AdManAd\">    <a href=\"http:\/\/adserve.efinancialnews.com\/accipiter\/adclick\/CID=fffffffcfffffffcfffffffc\/acc_random=26519048\/SITE=FNOUS\/AREA=HOME\/ZONE=9\/pageid=209418762\" target=\"_blank\"><img src=    \"http:\/\/imgfs.efinancialnews.com\/efn\/accipiter\/images\/AE1.gif\" border=\"0\"><\/a>  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>  <span class=\"storytext\">Hence the surprise when a large institutional investor suggested hedge funds should be making greater use of derivatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"storytext\">This was the case in September this year when <a class=\"keywordsearch\" href=\"?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=David+Smith\">David Smith<\/a>, chief investment director of  <a class=\"keywordsearch\" href=\"?page=ushome&amp;keywordsearch=GAM\">GAM<\/a>, the fourth largest fund of hedge funds manager in the world and winner of the <em>Financial News<\/em> best fund of hedge  funds group award 2007, criticized hedge funds for failing to make adequate use of derivatives to achieve their optimal strategic advantage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"storytext\">Others pointed to the overcrowding in the industry, with many following a \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cherd-like investment style\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span class=\"storytext\">The hedge fund industry has not exhibited the stellar returns that one would expect over the past few years, according to some advisers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/news\/url?sa=T&amp;ct=us\/5-0&amp;fd=R&amp;url=http:\/\/www.financialnews-us.com\/%3Fpage%3Dushome%26contentid%3D2349214104&amp;cid=1123913936&amp;ei=ZKdGR42xC4umqgOVvYTlCw\"><strong>ReadComplete Article<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Financial News Online US-&nbsp; Getting positional data from a hedge fund can be like squeezing blood from a stone.
