Rowe Price, and new investor Sixth Street Growth, after the data-and-AI platform crossed a $7 billion revenue run-rate with more than 80% year-over-year growth in the second quarter. For venture and growth allocators, the round is less a financing than a market-structure statement: the largest private AI-infrastructure companies can still raise multi-billion-dollar checks at higher marks without submitting to public-market volatility, and the bid is coming from crossover hedge funds, PE growth sleeves, and sovereign-linked capital as much as from traditional VC.

The company’s own release listed a crowded cap table that now includes new names BOND, Clearlake Capital, Point72, Premji Invest, and TPG alongside existing backers such as Andreessen Horowitz, Dragoneer, Fidelity, GIC, Goldman Sachs Alternatives, Insight Partners, Ontario Teachers’, Temasek, and Thrive Capital. CNBC noted the raise comes six months after a round that valued Databricks at $134 billion and included $5 billion of equity plus $2 billion of new debt capacity. CEO Ali Ghodsi told CNBC that Databricks intends to go public but that a listing now would be “too much distraction,” a formulation LPs should read as a duration warning: the exit clock on this vintage is being set by the company, not by the fund documents of the funds that own it.

Operating metrics in the release give the valuation some ballast and some tension. Databricks said it remains positive on adjusted free cash flow over the last twelve months, that more than 1,000 customers consume at over a $1 million revenue run-rate and more than 100 at over $10 million, that Lakehouse has surpassed a $1.5 billion run-rate growing over 100% year over year, and that Lakebase, its serverless Postgres database for AI agents, has exceeded a $100 million run-rate. A $190 billion mark on a $7 billion run-rate is still a rich multiple. The second-order question for LPs is not whether Databricks is a franchise; it is whether the next dollar of late-stage AI capital is buying growth or buying time, and whether continuation vehicles and secondaries will have to absorb the overflow when funds hit their term with no IPO.

TechCrunch reported that Databricks had wanted to raise about $1 billion until a leak during a June conference produced a rush of inbound demand, after which the company issued more stock and ultimately took $5 billion. That is a useful reminder for pacing. When the bid is that deep, existing managers face a classic crowding problem: participate and increase already-large single-name exposure, or pass and watch the mark walk away from the rest of the book. Coatue’s lead, Blackstone’s and Sixth Street’s presence, and Point72’s appearance on the new-investor list also blur the old VC-versus-hedge-fund boundary. Allocators who still run those sleeves as separate risk budgets are underwriting the same AI-infrastructure factor twice.

HedgeCo.Net — Databricks said Thursday it closed a $5 billion strategic funding round at a $190 billion valuation, led by Coatue with Blackstone, MGX, accounts advised by T.
