At the famous Breakers conference presented by Morgan Stanley, six hedge fund managers gave their top long idea and their top short idea for 2015. The event is a private event, but CNBC.com reportedly got the recommendations from someone in attendance. There wasn’t much of a consensus among the picks with two of the long ideas being in tech stocks, two being in the financial sector, one in basic materials and one in the consumer discretionary sector.
On the short side there was a little more of a consensus with three stocks from the consumer discretionary sector being represented, two from the tech sector and one stock from the basic materials realm. It should be noted that the bearish pick on basic materials wasn’t on a particular stock, but rather an all out bearish pick on natural gas.
One other theme from the list of picks was a propensity for foreign stocks. Of the 12 stocks on both lists, six were either foreign entities traded on the NYSE or they were listed on a foreign exchange.
The Breakers conference is one of the most prominent events in the hedge fund industry as it gives hedge fund managers an opportunity to tout their funds to prominent investors.
