Fierce Finance – What to make of Anil Kumar? He seemingly had it all as a respected consultant at McKinsey & Co. And yet he had some nugget of insecurity, so it seems, that made him easy picking for the likes of Raj Rajaratnam, the alleged mastermind of a massive insider trading scheme. Sure, Kumar was financially motivated, he got a secret six-figure salary from Rajaratnam and a $1 million bonus when one of his tips panned out for the fund.
But his testimony suggests a certain personality type–a classic pleaser perhaps. He so ardently wanted to please Rajaratnam, who played him like a fiddle. He knew how to play him up as a hero as well as signal his disappointment.
