WSJ – Recently,Michael Steinhardt asked his wife and weight-management overseer Judy if he could have an oatmeal cookie. “Suffer!” she cried, chuckling. Sulking, Mr. Steinhardt slumped into a nearby armchair and buried himself in a nursery catalogue entitled “Arrowhead Alpines.”

It’s a long way from Mr. Steinhardt’s days on Wall Street. Known for his intense competitiveness and outsized temper, Mr. Steinhardt spent 29 years running a hedge fund that grew to $4.4 billion while racking up annual returns of 30% before fees.
