Celebrity Poker Winnings Came From Hedge Fund Ponzi Scheme, Victims Claim

New York (HedgeCo.net) – Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are among a dozen high-profile celebrities alledged to have been involves in an illegal poker ring.

Some of the celebrities are being sued, according to Star Magazine, because the money they are said to have won from former hedge fund manager Bradley Ruderman was stolen from his clients.

The FBI investigation showed that Ruderman, CEO of Ruderman Capital Partners, had lost $25 million of his investors’ money (including over $300,000 to Maguire) in twice-weekly poker games at the luxury Beverly Hills Hotel, the Four Seasons and the Viper Room on Sunset Boulevard. The alleged buy-in was $100,000.

Also named in the suit is Alex Gores, Gabe Kaplan, Rick Salomon, Cody Leibel and Las Vegas entrepreneur Andrew Sasson.

Ruderman was convicted in 2009 of running a $44 million hedge fund Ponzi scheme and is serving a sentence for wire fraud and investment advisor fraud.

The victims of the hedge fund ponzi scheme have filed a series of civil suits against the big winners in the poker games, hoping to recover their lost savings.
