WEST PALM BEACH, FL (HedgeCo.Net) – The Van Global Hedge Fund Index gained 1.7% net of fees in September, according to preliminary data released by Van Hedge Fund Advisors International (VAN). Theindex is constructed from a pool of over 300 hedge funds from different regions of the world.
Reacting to the new data George Van, Chairman of VAN said, “It looks as if September was the best month for hedge funds since January, with the exception of short sellers, who bet against September’s rising stock market, we’re seeing gains across the spectrum among hedge fund managers. Just over three-quarters of the September hedge fund returns reported to us so far are positive and about half of the total group outranks the S&P 500’s 1.1% gain for last month.”
Such gain in September adds to the year-to-date average gain made by hedge funds, in a year marked by declining returns resulting from low market volume and volatility. According to the released data, �The Van Global Hedge Fund Index has gained 2.9% net for the year through September. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 has risen 1.5%, the MSCI World Equity Index has gained 1.1%, and the Europe Stoxx 50 has made 2.2%, all lesser gains than that of the average hedge fund. The NASDAQ is negative for the year to date, -5.0%.�
The rebound in September in the equity markets was one of the factors contributing to the recent preliminary gains recorded by the Index in September. Van will release an updated Index for September utilizing larger samples in mid-October according to the company. The Van Global Hedge Fund Index stands at 11,834.70 as at the end of September 2004.
