WEST PALM BEACH, FL (HEDGECO.NET) – A new released survey has shown that global assets under management by hedge funds have surpassed the $1 trillion mark. There has been discrepancy amongst thepublished reports about total assets managed by global hedge funds. Some hedge fund data trackers report between $800 billion, others report $1.2 trillion. There is little confusion today however, about the fact that hedge funds now manage in excess of one trillion in overall assets.
A new survey of banks and other institutions affiliated with the hedge fund industry by HFMagazine has shown that global hedge fund assets have been boosted to over the $1 trillion mark with over $16 billion of new assets gained by the industry in the last quarter. Hedge funds have surprisingly grown over the past three quarters, during which hedge fund returns have moderated considerably.
It remains unclear why global investors continue to embrace hedge fund strategies regardless of such poor results. According to HFManager, hedge funds have recently been perceived as legitimate investments. Hedge funds continue to win increasing acceptance as an asset class by not just wealthy investors anymore but also by institutional investors alike.
Charlie Kerr, publisher of HFManager said, “It will be interesting to see whether the growth continues into the next half. According to Kerr, it remains unclear if institutional investors such as pension funds will continue to put their assets into hedge funds at the same rate as they did when the going was good.
According to VAN, hedge fund tracking firm, Van Global Hedge Fund Index has risen 2.7% net of fees, year-to-date, putting it ahead of the major stock market benchmarks. The S&P 500, the MSCI World Equity Index and the Dow Jones Europe Stoxx 50 have generated lesser returns of 1.5%, 1.1%, and -0.8%, respectively.
