Disruptive Raised $10 Billion for Its First Blind-Pool Fund After a Decade of Investing Through SPVs

HedgeCo.Net — Disruptive, the Dallas-based growth investor founded in 2012 by Alex Davis, has raised $10 billion for its first flagship fund, according to TechCrunch and Axios. The vehicle will back at least 10 late-stage companies with checks of up to $1 billion, concentrating on capital-intensive areas including artificial intelligence, computing infrastructure and defense.

The fund marks a structural shift for the firm. Until now, Disruptive raised money deal by deal through special purpose vehicles, and the new fund is technically its first blind pool, in which investors commit capital without knowing which companies it will back. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month that the firm had already secured at least $7.5 billion in commitments, and TechCrunch cited the Dallas Business Journal describing it as the largest venture fund raised in Texas history.

Davis told Axios that the move was partly a response to concerns about the SPV market as large private companies head toward public listings. He said he worried that small investors who bought into deals through layers of intermediaries could discover those intermediaries no longer exist, and that the firm did not want to be lumped in with that part of the market.

The firm’s active investments include Databricks, Groq, ElevenLabs, Helsing, Reflection AI and Shield AI, and earlier holdings included Airbnb, Spotify and Palantir. Bloomberg reported that Disruptive told LPs it has returned more than $6 billion on roughly $1.9 billion invested in startups, per TechCrunch.

For allocators, the raise is a notable data point in the debate over SPV access to late-stage private companies. A commingled fund brings standard governance, reporting and fee terms that single-deal vehicles often lack, while a mandate of 10 or so large positions leaves returns highly concentrated in a handful of AI and defense names.
