HedgeCo.Net — Sequoia Capital is closing its London office after about six years and cutting parts of its Europe team, saying it does not see the need for a local presence and can support European founders from its Bay Area headquarters, Sifted and Business Insider reported on November 4. The firm announced the changes in a post on X that also described a broader flattening of its investing partnership.
Sequoia said a two-decade expansionary phase had required real management to run operations, but that management hierarchy had “crept over into the investing team” as an unintended side effect. The firm is making internal changes to flatten the partnership so every partner can flourish and every founder receives the full benefit of the firm regardless of who the lead partner is. It is also dropping its Monday partner meeting cycle and sunsetting its batch accelerator and Scouts programs. Some London employees are leaving as a result of the office closure.
The overhaul continues a leadership transition that began when Alfred Lin and Pat Grady took on co-steward roles in late 2025 as longtime partner Roelof Botha stepped down. Sequoia framed the leaner structure as a way to double down on concentrated, founder-led decision-making while keeping its mission of delivering returns to limited partners unchanged.
The London exit and partnership flattening put Sequoia in a wider corporate trend of reducing management layers, though Sequoia cast the move as an investing-culture correction rather than an AI-driven headcount cut. European coverage will now run from California rather than a dedicated local office.
For limited partners and founders, the practical questions are coverage depth for European early-stage companies without a London base, how flattened partner authority changes deal leadership and credit, and whether winding down Scouts and the batch accelerator narrows Sequoia’s top-of-funnel sourcing outside its core franchise.
