Number of Japanese Institutions investing in Hedge Funds almost doubles

A new released report shows that the proportion of Japanese institutions investing in hedge funds has more than doubled during the past 12 months. According to a new survey conducted by the HedgeFund Research Company, Greenwich Associates, the number of Japanese institutions implementing hedge fund investment strategies has grown by 39%.

The new study interviewed a total of 314 of the largest pension funds, including corporate and public pension funds and other financial institutions. According to Greenwichs data, 42% of assets were invested in equities, 48% in bonds and 10% in other investment classes, including hedge funds, private equity, real estate and cash.

The study also showed that new asset allocations to hedge fund management portfolios would show a significant increase in the future. In 2002, only 10% of Japanese institutions invested in hedge funds, according to Greenwich study. By 2004 that number had risen to about 39%.

The report also showed that most Japanese institutions were adopting a more cautious approach in making their hedge fund allocations, by channeling their investments through fund of funds vehicles. However, the percentage of the Japanese institutions investing with single hedge fund managers has also increased from a previous level of 7% in 2002, to 27% as shown by the report.
