Tokyo Hedge Funds Club, the informal network of professionals in the Japanese hedge funds industry, has seen explosive growth.
Since the club’s launch only five months ago, the network has grown to more than 1,000 members. Its networking evenings in Tokyo regularly attract hundreds of hedge fund managers, institutional investors and other senior industry professionals.
“Unlike many other events and industry associations, we have succeeded in gaining the industry’s backing. From the beginning we have concentrated on the one thing that matters the most – helping people do business. We attract not only the established hedge fund managers and the big institutional investors, we also get many emerging managers, that you won’t find in any industry databases or directories, attending our events,” said the club’s founder and president Stefan Nilsson.
“According to Eurekahedge there are now some US$24 billion invested in hedge funds with Japan-focused strategies. In addition, there are billions of dollars invested by Japanese investors in hedge funds globally,” Nilsson continued.
“In a recent study by Greenwich Associates, it was revealed that 55% of Japanese institutional investors had invested in hedge funds, which compares with 28% for US institutions and 10% in the UK. Thus it is obvious to me that the Japanese hedge funds industry is here to stay and that it will continue to grow. The Tokyo Hedge Funds Club, which is now established as the biggest professional hedge funds network in Japan, helps to promote the industry as a whole,” says Nilsson, who apart from the club is managing director and board member of global macro hedge fund firm ProfitFundCom.
The club’s invitation-only events are now so popular that they attract not only the top decision-makers from Tokyo, but also investors and money managers from throughout Asia and from as far away as Dublin, Geneva and Hawaii.
The next networking event will be held on December 7th in conjunction with the Hedge Funds World Japan conference. The invitation-only networking evening is free to attend for invited institutional investors and hedge fund managers.
The event is sponsored by ABN AMRO Global Futures, Singapore Exchange, TSI International, ProfitFundCom, Hedge Funds World Japan, Profit Research Center and Chateau La Fresnaye.
