HedgeCo.Net — Monomoy Capital Partners has closed its inaugural Monomoy Family Fund with $589 million of total commitments, including $89 million from the firm and its affiliates. The fund raised against a $500 million external hard cap and reached its final close three months after launch, and Monomoy said it was fully allocated in two weeks.
The fund was raised entirely from Monomoy’s existing limited partners, a group that includes endowments, foundations, pension plans, insurance companies and family offices. “They committed quickly, and we were able to rely on support entirely from within our existing investor base,” said Ashley Johansen, managing director and head of investor relations.
The new vehicle targets lower-middle-market deals, including family-owned businesses, corporate carve-outs and take-privates, in the industrial, consumer and services sectors that Monomoy has focused on over its 21-year history. Founding partner and co-CEO Dan Collin said the fund gives the firm dedicated capital for transactions with enterprise values of $200 million and below, and that alongside its flagship Monomoy Capital Partners Fund V, the firm can now pursue businesses with annual EBITDA from $15 million to more than $250 million.
The size of the manager’s own commitment stands out. Collin said Monomoy and its affiliates committed nearly 15% of the fund’s capital, well above the low single-digit GP commitments that are common in buyout funds. The fund will rely on Monomoy’s in-house operating team to work with portfolio company management on value-creation plans. Paul Hastings served as fund counsel.
The close adds to a pattern in private equity fundraising: established managers are raising smaller, adjacent vehicles quickly from existing LPs, while first-time and mid-sized funds face longer marketing periods. A fast close from a re-up base, paired with a large GP commitment, is the kind of alignment allocators tend to reward.
