HedgeCo.Net — Pantheon has held the final close of Pantheon Global Secondaries Fund VIII and associated vehicles with $6 billion of commitments, exceeding the program’s $3.5 billion target by 71% and making it the firm’s largest private equity secondaries fundraise to date. The London- and New York-based manager, which oversees about $84 billion, said new investors from Asia and the Middle East made significant commitments.
The fund takes a blended approach across LP-led and GP-led transactions and focuses on the global mid-market, with a tilt toward buyout strategies. Pantheon said the aim is to give investors exposure to hard-to-access general partners through a portfolio diversified by vintage, manager and geography. The close follows record deployment of about $3.35 billion across 17 secondary transactions in 2025.
“Our private equity secondaries strategy continues to be a compelling way for our investors to access high-quality private equity exposure with the diversification benefits the asset class provides,” said Amyn Hassanally, partner and global head of private equity secondaries. Chief client officer Florence Dard said clients value the firm’s focus on the mid-market and its long-standing relationships with top-performing managers. Pantheon made its first private equity secondaries investment in 1988, and secondaries are a core part of its $41 billion private equity platform.
The size of the overshoot says more about the market than about one fund. With exits slow and distributions running below what limited partners need, secondaries buyers have become the main source of liquidity for investors who want to trim exposure and for sponsors who want to hold assets longer through continuation vehicles. That demand for liquidity has turned dedicated secondaries capital into one of the few fundraising categories where flagship programs are beating targets by wide margins.
For allocators, the question is pricing. A larger pool of secondaries capital chasing a growing supply of LP stakes and GP-led deals can support tighter discounts to reported values, which helps sellers but compresses the entry advantage that has underpinned secondaries returns. Pantheon did not disclose pricing levels. Its emphasis on mid-market GPs and selection suggests the bet is that the best risk-adjusted entry points sit below the mega-buyout end of the market.
