Churchill Closed Junior Capital Opportunities Fund III at a Record $1.54 Billion, More Than Doubling Its Predecessor

HedgeCo.Net — Churchill Asset Management, the U.S. asset management arm of Nuveen Private Capital, announced the final close of Junior Capital Opportunities Fund III with $1.54 billion of total commitments. The fund is the largest in Churchill’s Junior Capital Opportunities program, exceeded its $1 billion target by more than 50% and more than doubled the $737 million raised by its predecessor.

JCOF III invests in junior debt to private equity sponsor-backed U.S. middle market companies. Its investors are a global group of pension funds, insurance companies, asset managers and family offices. About $665 million of commitments came through rated feeder structures designed to give insurance investors capital-efficient access to the strategy.

The fund has already deployed about $600 million across 44 portfolio companies alongside 30 private equity firms. Churchill said its junior capital and private equity solutions team has invested more than $10 billion across over 290 junior capital transactions since 2011, serving as lead provider in roughly 70% of them.

Derek Fricke, who heads direct investments for the team, pointed to Churchill’s approximately $14 billion of private equity fund commitments as a sourcing advantage, since the firm is both a limited partner in sponsors’ funds and a capital provider to their portfolio companies.

The rated feeder component is the structural point to watch. With roughly 43% of commitments arriving through insurer-oriented vehicles, junior capital is being packaged to fit regulatory capital frameworks, which widens the pool of buyers for a strategy that sits below senior and unitranche debt.
